Uncle Matt’s offering organic Sicilian blood oranges

Uncle Matt’s, based in Clermont, FL, is partnering with Agrinova, a co-op of small organic growers in Sicily, to offer premium organic Sicilian blood oranges to U.S. consumers. The oranges will be available starting the week of March 8 through early April.

Founded in Sicily over 20 years ago, Agrinova farms its crops in the nutrient- rich volcanic soil near Mount Etna. Like Uncle Matt’s, Agrinova believes in farming in harmony with nature and does not use chemical fertilizers or pesticides on any of their crops.

“I personally went to Sicily to inspect their farms and meet their growers,” Matt McLean, chief executive officer of Uncle Matt’s, said in a March 3 press release. “Not only do we share the same organic growing philosophy, but we share the same high standards in growing practices and were able to exchange knowledge and ideas involving organic citrus production.”

Uncle Matt’s introduces Sicilian Blood Oranges

Organic citrus grower-shipper Uncle Matt’s Organic Inc. is offering Sicilian blood oranges.

The variety, available from March 8 through the early part of April, will be imported to the U.S. via a partnership the Clermont, Fla., operation has with Agrinova, a Sicilian cooperative of organic growers that has citrus groves in the volcanic soil near Mt. Etna, according to a news release.

“I personally went to Sicily to inspect their farms and meet their growers,” Matt McLean, Uncle Matt’s’ chief executive officer, said in the release. “Not only do we share the same organic growing philosophy, but we share the same high standards in growing practices and were able to exchange knowledge and ideas involving organic citrus production.”

The blood oranges originated in Italy and possess a tangy citrus flavor.

According to the release, Agrinova’s growers believe in natural organic farming free of chemicals.

The fruit’s deep red color originates from anthocyanin, an antioxidant that has many health benefits, according to the release.

Uncle Matt’s is offering the certified organic tarocco and sanguinello varieties.
